Construction of the reception pavilion of the University of Liège
About
A study was conducted on the Sart-Tilman site to determine the needs of the University of Liege. Subsequently, a competition was launched for the construction of a cafeteria, the extension of the faculty of civil engineering and the construction of a reception building: the North Zone connection.

At the scale of the site, the building is particularly modest. It contains only a reception area, a workspace and an auditorium. Its strategic role is not only to be a « letter box «. It acts as a landmark for all those who arrive on the site.

The aim is to combine openness, relationship to the outside world, dialogue and a strong signal. Its size allows it to be clearly visible from all access points to the traffic circle. On the traffic circle side, it is closed and compact. On the other side, it is open towards the promenade, the trees and the sun. The absence of a main façade reinforces its visibility as an object.

When night falls, the reception building becomes a «lantern». The ceramic façade material plays an important role in the perception. It expresses the vision of an architecture that is both eminently contemporary and environmentally respectful.
