Planning of Albert 1er square at Monceau-sur-Sambre
About
The Monceau-sur-Sambre territory is clearly delimited by infrastructures and landscape lines: To the south by the Sambre and the Mons Street, to the west by the Castel park and the Ravel, to the north by the slag heaps, to the east by the Trazegnies road and the Brussels Charleroi canal. These clear boundaries undoubtedly reinforce the strong identity of the agglomeration.
The old town straddles a mesh of coherent, homogeneous built blocks and the park of the Monceau Castel, a large public domain now called Nelson Mandela Park.
Place Albert 1er is a link between these two entities: The park and the built blocks. It stretches out like an arm to bring the city into the park or to stage the green space with the setting urban. The permeability of the boundaries between the park and the square, in connection with the historical evolution of the relationship between the castle and the built fabric, is at the heart of the project questioning. The materiality of the ground is thought out in relation to the quality architectural heritage that surrounds the space of the square.
