- About
The project consists of a targeted transformation/renovation of the existing buildings, integrating new services as well as a programmatic redefinition of certain spaces and a reworking of circulation in conjunction with an extension. The three-storey extension is an extension of one of the existing buildings, and includes classrooms and a college hall. Particular attention was paid to the project's integration into the landscape and its image through contextual integration. In addition, the existing building was maximized by rationalizing interventions and targeting efforts on the necessary parts.
The landscape integration of the project in its dialogue with the site is considered through two concomitant approaches: its volumetric inscription in continuity with the existing through an innovative development punctuating the mineral and vegetal playgrounds, and the expression of its facades challenging the historic building. The child's path is of particular importance and is marked by sequences: the first begins on the street and continues along a path between the existing buildings. The second is marked by a quiet, green patio, the meeting place, while the third sequence is the exploration of the garden.
The project develops a homogeneous identity that takes into account the uses and appropriation of the premises. The new classrooms are mainly north-east-facing and protected from the south-west by walkways, while the multi-purpose hall benefits from covered courtyards to reduce the risk of overheating. Overall consideration has been given to solar gain and the size and position of openings, thus reducing energy consumption.
Through the extension, the project proposes to redefine the site's organization chart by clarifying the three wings. The construction is designed to be simple, modular, flexible and adaptable. One wing is devoted to administrative functions, while the other two house the children. Two refectories/childcare facilities are located on the street side, for easy access. The layout of the new classrooms follows the current logic of distribution, with circulation, sanitary and technical cores positioned at the crossroads of the corridors. The corridors allow users to stroll through the central space, while extending their privileged interior space. They are punctuated by the variation of bays, reinforcing their promenade-like character.
The flexibility of the different class combinations ensures that the program is highly adaptable, guaranteeing the project's ability to evolve, and consequently its sustainability. The structural system, based on a regular grid of beams/columns, and the prefabrication of the concrete serve this principle. The plan allows the project to evolve through the addition of modular parts, with a phased construction principle.
The project's image was approached through its contextual integration. The form takes its essence from the volumetric continuity with the existing building and the reuse of site materials and colors. The project's formal approach plays a key role in its identity, as do its location, orientation, room layout and functional and economic rationality. The modenature of the bays reinforces the magic of the spaces, offering a variety of framings to suit the scale of the children. The geometrical layout of the ironwork on the walkways and joinery, and the latticework used as railings, enliven the movement areas while responding to structural logic and economic efficiency. The chromatic aspect of the project, neutral and timeless, plays in contrast with the surrounding red brick. The duration of the materials used (brick, concrete, steel and aluminum) plays a full part in the project's sustainable development.
