Beyond the Pavilion – portraits of architects: Vincent Callebaut
The documentary Beyond the Pavilion, directed by Mister Emma, highlights three Walloon architects who represented Belgium through the design of national pavilions at World Expos.
The film sheds light on architectural visions that are both unique and complementary, interwoven with questions of sustainability, innovation, and identity. Blending moments of daily life with reflections on the act of building, it offers a sensitive portrait of contemporary Walloon architecture and its place within global debates. The documentary takes viewers on a journey through several emblematic projects.
Vincent Callebaut : a visionary approach rooted in nature
Vincent Callebaut embodies a distinctive and forward-thinking figure in sustainable architecture. From Paris to Dubai, via Montpellier and Taipei, the film explores the mind and practice of an architect who places nature, technology, and poetry at the heart of his work.
Originally from La Louvière, Callebaut developed an early fascination for the city, convinced that architecture has the power to influence human well-being and emotion. A strong advocate of compact and resilient urban development, he opposes the suburban sprawl model, which he sees as responsible for disconnecting citizens from nature and their environment.
His architectural practice, grounded in biomimicry, seeks to create buildings capable of generating their own energy, recycling waste, and coexisting harmoniously with ecosystems.
Whether through the urban regeneration project in Aix-les-Bains, based on land sobriety and energy solidarity, or the masterplan for Lausanne, envisioned as a model of reversible and green urbanism, Callebaut promotes a circular and collaborative approach to city-making.
His projects combine bio-based materials, renewable energies, and citizen participation to transform each site into a living ecosystem. The belgian Pavilion in Dubai: connecting minds, building the future
At Expo 2020 Dubai, Vincent Callebaut designed the Belgian Pavilion, in collaboration with Assar Architects.
Conceived as a bridge-building, the pavilion physically and symbolically connected the districts of Mobility and Sustainability, expressing the unity of Belgium’s three communities.
Inspired by the Expo’s theme — Connecting Minds, Creating the Future — the project embodies Callebaut’s vision of bioclimatic architecture, shaped by the sun, prevailing winds, and local climate to ensure natural ventilation and protection from direct solar exposure.Describing himself as an “architect of the living”, Callebaut sees architecture as a living artwork, deeply attuned to both nature and local culture — a practice where environmental intelligence and aesthetic emotion merge to envision a more harmonious future.
