Programme

Design of an aerial cable transport system connecting Namur city center and the esplanade of its Citadel.

About

The Sambre and Meuse rivers, and above all the difference in elevation, make it difficult for Namur residents to access the Citadel. The city of Namur aims to reconnect this exceptional heritage and tourist site with the city center by installing an aerial cableway.

The city of Namur has therefore signed a 30-year concession contract for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of an aerial cable transport system connecting the city center and the esplanade of the Citadel of Namur. In addition to the transport system, the concessionaire will develop a hospitality business.

As for the upper station, the shape of the volume created is based on the particular morphology of the pavilion near the project. The simple shape of the upper station thus avoids “overloading” the public space. However, each building has its own unique design in order to preserve its identity.

The building is composed of functions that are very specific to the operation of the cable car. In order to conceal the technical functions of the building as much as possible and create a sense of unity, a micro-perforated metal screen lacquered in golden yellow extends around the building and continues in front of the pavilion.
