Contemporary single-family house developed over two levels in the Flemish plain of Herne.

About

Dawn brushes across the Flemish plain. Dew settles along the furrows, and in the emerging light, the patient curves of the land appear. Trees mark the horizon, while a white chapel stands in the distance. The scene evokes the inhabited stillness of a Flemish painting.

Facing this expanse, the house settles with restraint. Neither object nor rupture, it aligns with the site’s forces, bow toward the street, stern toward the valley. Its presence is horizontal, almost geological: two cantilevered concrete slabs extend the horizon, forming an inhabited base suspended between earth and sky.

Between these lines, space unfolds. The dwelling does not enclose itself; it frames and amplifies the landscape. Each opening is intentional — capturing a bell tower, opening to the rolling fields, preserving privacy. At the rear, the façade dissolves to embrace the depth of the territory.

The plan is structured by two concrete shear walls, organizing three bays: service spaces to the north, circulation at the center, and living areas to the south, oriented toward light. The house favors site precision over symmetry, replacing the traditional roof with a protective canopy.

The cantilevered slabs extend use and regulate climate. They filter sunlight, shelter from weather, and define inhabitable thresholds. Pigmented concrete anchors the house to the ground, while formwork traces express a quiet constructive memory. Bronze-toned frames catch the light without dominating it.

The environmental approach is discreet and coherent: thermal mass, internal insulation, a ground-coupled system, heat pump, and radiant slabs ensure comfort. Solar gains, rainwater harvesting, and on-site treatment contribute to measured autonomy.

More than an object, the house operates as a landscape instrument. It does not seek to impose itself; it organizes, frames, and calms. An architecture of precision, where technique recedes in favor of experience
