The BREEAM Awards are held annually and recognise people, projects and organisations that are leading the way in sustainable design and development. Due to the current pandemic, the awards will be presented digitally this year during a three-day event starting on 23 March.

The list of finalists includes more than 50 projects from all over the world, including three projects by Belgian architects: Tivoli GreenCity in Laeken, De Faar by Beel (The New Docks) in Ghent and The New York & London Residence in Antwerp.

Tivoli GreenCity (BREEAM-Outstanding)

Candidate for the BREEAM Awards in the category "Regional Award: Western Europe". The exemplary new sustainable neighbourhood in Laeken is home to greenbizz.brussels (an SME park, a fab lab and an incubator for sustainable and innovative entrepreneurship all under one roof), some 400 passive and zero-energy houses, shops, two nurseries and numerous communal meeting spaces.

Tivoli GreenCity, whose urban design was conceived by MSA, covers a 4.5-hectare site in Laeken. From the outset, the initiator, citydev.brussels, wanted to develop a new district that was innovative in terms of sustainable development and social and functional diversity in an urban environment. It worked with a number of private partners: the architectural firm architectesassoc+ designed the innovative greenbizz.brussels building, which was built by BAM Contractors, in collaboration with Cenergie (responsible for the sustainability concept). The residential part was developed by Parbam (a collaboration between Kairos and Pargesy) on a project by Adriana (a temporary association of the architectural firms Cerau, Atelier 55, Atlante, YY Architecture and Eole) in collaboration with Boydens Engineering. The THV BAM Contractors-Jacques Delens-BPC was responsible for the construction of this extensive residential project. Bopro acted as sustainability manager.

De Faar by Beel, The New Docks

In the category "Homes: Design Stage Award", "De Faar" by Stéphane Beel Architects. New neighbourhood along the Schipperskaai in Ghent.

The New York & London Residence - Sergison Bates Architects

Nominated in the category "Homes: Design Stage Award", 119 flats over six storeys, part of the Cadix A5 project on the Eilandje in Antwerp.
