“The Charleroi ring road (R9), the audacity of engineers for some, an urban scar for others, constitutes a belt that surrounds and delimits the heart of the city. Inaugurated in 1975, it has deteriorated considerably over the years. Started in September 2014, restoration work on the southern part of the structure rehabilitates 1.8 kilometers of roadway. Fifteen bridges and viaducts, as well as nine accesses and exits, are concerned. Considering all the data, Jean Glibert has developed a project to highlight the R9 crossing structures by placing color in their upper parts (main beams, headers and piles) following a desire to participate in the readability of the 'architecture. The proposal is declined through twenty interventions calibrated on the technical characteristics of the bridges, on the relationships they maintain between them and with the landscape. Three colors were used: a muted bronze to neutralize the visual clutter of the structural supports; a black and a red that draw geometric figures and intentionally sequence the muffled canvas. “Light” research partially accompanies these intentions. At night, the lighting keeps the work legible, animates the play of the painted compositions and creates new perspectives invisible during the day."
