Project

BAYARDS house

Architect

bruum architecture

Programme

The home is designed to accommodate an urban family, without a car, who enjoy cycling and public transport. The direct presence of the new Liège tram line in the immediate vicinity of the plot allows a direct connection with the city.

About

This narrow corner plot of 32m2 located at the entrance of Bayards street and surrounded by two blind walls has little to offer... at first sight. The whole process consists of systematically taking the opposite approach to the constraints of the project. Space is small/feeling will be large; the plot does not have a garden/it will accommodate a large tree; the views are limited/the house will multiply straight, oblique, long perspectives...; the street is austere/the cladding, the exterior spaces, the entrances will promote an open (although intimate) relationship with the environment...

Although the tree could not be placed there for technical reasons, it left a trace which the hollowed-out center of the house bears witness to. Starting from a mineral entrance garden forming a buffer space between the hustle of the city and the interior of the home, the spaces are distributed along various staircases which lead to the roof terrace where the entire width of the Meuse valley can be seen. Corrugated metal cladding covers the volume and follows the gentle curve that accompanies the entrance to the street.
