- About
Nestled at the back of the plot and surrounded by three blind walls, the existing building is defined by its unique access to natural light and the absence of views to the outside. The Strauwen project seeks to transform this introverted volume into a lively space, playing with light, depth, and spatial perception.
The site is now organized as a succession of non-hierarchical spaces, defined by thick sliding wooden partitions. These walls provide maximum flexibility, adjusting privacy, light, and room layout according to the occupants’ needs. The existing concrete floor has been reinterpreted across different levels, emphasizing the rhythm of the partitions and creating a sense of depth and perspective.
The interior journey unfolds as a series of visual sequences, with each space carefully framed and punctuated by precisely arranged light objects. The patio and the upper terrace interact with each other, connected by a movable red metal staircase, forming a tangible link between the two levels.
The project thus generates a succession of constantly evolving viewpoints and interior landscapes, offering a rich spatial experience while countering the isolation of the original volume. Unlike traditional approaches, Strauwen prioritizes interior perspectives, rethinking the role of light and depth in Brussels’ row houses, which are often deep and receive limited natural light.
