MERIDIANO

Programme

Meridiano is an exhibition space dedicated to long-term, experimental, and site-specific artistic projects. Moving away from the traditional gallery model, it places emphasis on immersion, dialogue, and exchange. Founded by Nicholas Olney and Boris Vervoordt, the space hosts two exhibitions per year by international artists from diverse disciplines, invited to expand their practice through the use of locally sourced materials or through immersion in the natural landscapes of Oaxaca.

About

Designed by Tatsuro Miki in collaboration with Axel Vervoordt, the building’s architecture draws on minimalist forms reminiscent of a cloister or an atrium. Accessed via a discreet path, the project is organized around an open square courtyard leading to a covered rectangular volume, illuminated solely by a zenithal opening. This aperture toward the sky establishes a constant dialogue between the artworks and natural elements—light, air, and heat—whose subtle variations shape the spatial experience. The building’s trapezoidal prismatic form is grounded in simple principles derived from sacred geometry.

Set along a secluded stretch of Oaxaca’s Pacific coastline, west of Puerto Escondido, Meridiano is embedded within a preserved natural environment, oriented along the cardinal points between ocean and mountains. The pronounced presence of the elements and the site’s isolation provide a fertile context for the exploration of materiality and a critical distance from urban art centers. Conceived as a timeless space for contemplation, the project was realized in close collaboration with local stakeholders and built exclusively from regional materials—stone, natural lime plaster, and Parota wood—ensuring the preservation of the surrounding landscape and biodiversity.
