- Programme
The Memorial Garden is a place of reflection and healing, designed to honor the memory of victims of pedophilia while offering the people of Charleroi a soothing and contemplative environment.
At the heart of the design is a planted tumulus, symbolizing both protection and renewal, accompanied by a protective wall, a secluded alcove for quiet contemplation, and a subtle artistic intervention. Together, these elements create a delicate balance between remembrance and hope, allowing visitors to find comfort and peace.
The landscape is carefully curated to encourage connection and serenity, while also playing a role in revitalizing the image of the neighborhood. A selection of evolving vegetation and natural materials enhances the space’s gentle and luminous atmosphere, reinforcing its role as a sanctuary for resilience and remembrance.
- About
A memorial garden has been created in Marcinelle to pay tribute to Julie, Mélissa, Sabine and Laetitia. The architects of RESERVOIR A designed this local place of remembrance, in collaboration with artist Christophe Terlinden and landscape architects Carbonifère. They worked in collaboration with Charleroi Bouwmeester and in consultation with the victims' relatives to heal the very site of the tragedy that shook the entire country. Words can bring relief, and time works to alleviate tragedies that are impossible to erase from memory. As the walls remain silent witnesses, it was necessary for the space itself to play a restorative role. The Dutroux house has been demolished, and the space is now coming back to life thanks to a wonderful garden, between earth and sky, which gives way to color, softness and light.
Facing the railroad tracks, the rehabilitation at the corner of Avenue de Philippeville and Rue des Damzelles is protected by a high retaining wall that cannot be crossed. This height ensures a certain distance from passers-by in order to preserve the serenity and cleanliness of the site. An alcove is integrated directly into the brick retaining wall, using a specific orthogonal layout. This discreet, recessed element is used to pay homage, to place a flower or a thought. On the mound, the planting species were chosen for their delicacy and color palette.
The memorial garden and public space are lit by the existing candelabra, renovated and reinstalled on a new mast. The gable walls are clad in glazed white brick, reflecting light even on a gloomy day. On one of them, the hopeful image of a child with a kite, dear to the hearts of local residents, has been reinterpreted and integrated.
