Marcinelle Aquatic Centre

RESERVOIR A

Programme

Built in the 1960s, the Marcinelle Aquatic Centre is undoubtedly one of the most iconic projects by architect Jacques Depelsenaire and the city of Charleroi. Its bold architecture, which blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, makes it one of the most popular places among Charleroi residents. The client requested the renovation of the pools and the large pool decks, which are designed to fit in with the complex topography of the site.

About

The architectural proposal consists of superimposing a grid over the entire existing swimming pool. This grid is designed as an evolving element that transforms itself when it encounters the geometric elements of Jacques Depelsenaire's swimming pool. The result is a large tableau that can be observed from above: from the streets of the neighbouring district overlooking the site or from the panoramic terraces that make up the image of the adjacent building.
