The competition presented a unique opportunity to address the existing building not only through its technical and programmatic upgrades, but also in its broader context. Situated within a constellation of pavilions dedicated to educational and mental care centers, the day center forms a vital part of a lush green campus.
Our winning proposal sought to enhance the linkages between the existing pavilions and their natural surroundings through precise interventions that reinforced their connections. By strategically cutting the existing building and introducing covered areas, the building is transformed into three pavilions, each of which fits harmoniously within their built environment. These in-between covered spaces serve to connect the pavilions, while simultaneously opening up the day center to the surrounding campus.
With large foldable windows and perforated roofs, the pavilions are filled with natural light, creating generous access to the outdoors. Deliberately un-programmed, these spaces reflect our belief in the benefits of open air on the daily lives of the children, who can now thrive in an environment that supports their unique needs. Overall, this innovative design seamlessly integrates with the campus, fostering a sense of community and promoting the development of its users.
