Audrey Contesse - ICA-WB

The Réappropriations exhibition, running from 12 October to 26 November 2023 at the Halles Universitaires de Louvain-la-Neuve, invites visitors to discover spatial strategies that repair the damaged world in which we live. These projects, on an architectural and territorial scale, propose densifying existing buildings rather than consuming virgin space, regenerating existing constructions rather than demolishing in order to rebuild, and finally, integrating the reuse of construction materials. Models, photographs, films, drawings, collages and interviews create a dialogue between completed architectural projects, expert spatial studies and citizen participation.

As well as drawing attention to the exceptional renovation of the Halles Universitaires (architect Yves Lepère) with the Harvest column installation by Flore Fockedey, Petar Petricevic and Johanna Bendlin at the entrance to the building, Réappropriations is also forging a dialogue between recently completed architectural projects, citizen participation and spatial studies by experts.

Seven architectural projects from Wallonia and Brussels by the architecture offices AgwA, Artau Architectures, Atelier Chora, Label architecture, Notan Office, Olivier Fourneau architectes and Ouest Architecture x Rotor interact with Désirs et formes d'habiter, which relates the spatial approaches of teenagers and senior citizens from Walloon Brabant, developed and collected during workshops organised by the ICA and the Maison de l'urbanisme-Centre culturel du Brabant Wallon. They then interact with two forward-looking visions: one on the regeneration potential of Louvain-la-Neuve by the Super-positions research laboratory (UCLouvain) and the other on the future of four-front villas in Walloon Brabant by vvv architecture urbanisme + Guillaume Vanneste (UCLouvain). Each of these strategies provides an answer to the initial question: "What do buildings, their sites and their territories need to remain or become relevant in the face of tomorrow's challenges? These reflections are complemented by the New Way of Life series, in which visual artist Aurélie William Levaux embroiders libels on our current living environment with a singular sense of humour.

Réappropriations is also celebrating the national release of  Architectures Wallonie-Bruxelles Inventaires #4 Inventories 2020-2023 - Vers une démarche architecturale régénérative. This work, steered by the ICA and published by the Cellule architecture de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, aims to promote spatial approaches, i.e. both projects and actions, capable of activating the necessary spatial, environmental and societal transition.
