- About
Following an international competition launched by the City of Bordeaux to create a new landmark building in high-rise timber construction, the Silva residential tower fully met this challenge, with more than 50% of its design composed of wood.
The Bordeaux Saint-Jean Belcier development zone (ZAC), located near the Saint-Jean intermodal station, extends over 145 hectares along the Garonne River. Originally made up of industrial and commercial brownfields, metropolitan facilities, and an older neighborhood, this heterogeneous area is currently undergoing a major urban renewal transformation.
The floors and façades, made of locally sourced glued laminated timber (glulam), are brought to the forefront, and the design incorporates the latest structural innovations along with a strong focus on residents’ comfort and safety.
Balconies and loggias are generous in number, nestled within the building envelope, and biodiversity is fully integrated into the master plan. The glazed façades proudly reveal the timber structural elements while protecting them, expressing the project’s sustainable ambitions to the city and beyond.
With multiple permeable openings at ground level, as well as setbacks allowing natural light to penetrate the heart of the block, the buildings interact harmoniously with the surrounding urban fabric and provide direct access to the tram station to the west, along with a pedestrian and cycling corridor to the east.
The street level is deliberately designed as a sensory experience, using timber to highlight its tactile and olfactory qualities, with public spaces that encourage interaction between residents and the neighborhood.
Pedestrian comfort is enhanced by separating vehicular traffic around the perimeter of the block, while custom-designed street furniture structures the outdoor spaces and biotopes.
The building aims for a positive carbon footprint, prioritizing bio-based sourcing, local materials, ease of recycling, and high indoor and outdoor air quality.
Off-site prefabrication ensures a streamlined and rapid construction process, with minimal - if not positive - impact on the surrounding community.- Typology
