Construction of 2 social housing units

About

The project is strategically located at the head of a residential area, on the edge of an opening into the public space, thereby leveraging its advantageous position to assert a controlled presence. The massing of the building adapts to the template of the adjoining buildings, while a terminal hipped roof marks its role as an end or head building.

The redesigned double-sloped roof is consistent with the morphological continuity of the existing building, yet it is distinguished by a subtle interplay of proportions.
The constructional grid is notable for its rigour, which results in a clearly delineated interior space, with each dwelling arranged according to the grid.

The upper-level circulation space, conceived as an openwork walkway, fulfils a structural function within the spatial composition.

The interior design is characterised by a deliberate austerity, with the warmth of the structural timber complementing the roughness of the exposed blocks and slabs.

In terms of volume, a vertical cedar plinth and anthracite slate cladding at the top create a sober dialogue, giving the project a tactile, long-lasting materiality.
