Programme

Construction of 14 social housing units

About

The project is characterised by a fine, controlled architectural approach, combining urban density and spatial quality. By combining a series of semi-detached dwellings with open-plan layouts, it creates a balanced urban fabric in which each unit contributes to the clear, fluid definition of the neighbourhood. The creation of footpaths for soft mobility encourages calmer pedestrian traffic, reinforcing the conviviality of the public spaces.

The entrance to the dwellings is via covered passageways, extended by landscaping that provides a gentle transition from the street. The front flats have side entrances that liven up the alleyways and contribute to the liveliness of the public spaces, encouraging an active relationship between inside and outside.

The building is based on a rigorous composition in which modularity and variation create a subtle balance between unity and diversity.

To meet the needs of the programme, the number of rooms in certain modules has been adjusted without breaking the overall structure, with these variations strategically positioned at the head and tail of the series. This organisation allows these specific homes to open onto three façades, enhancing their quality of use and their relationship with the alleyway or public spaces.

The internal organisation of the homes reveals a thoughtful spatial approach: the double height and zenithal light, made possible by a central vertical circulation system, create living spaces that are bright, generous and fluid. The east-west orientation maximises light comfort throughout the day, while the layout of the rooms creates an intimate dialogue between the interior and the garden.

The materials used are perfectly suited to the local context. The choice of grey brick, in harmony with the traditional stone and brick of the centre of Mettet, gives the facades a subtle contemporary identity that respects the heritage. Architectural details such as the projecting volumes and integrated landscaping reinforce the overall coherence of the project.

In this way, the project successfully combines architectural quality, spatial comfort and urban integration, offering a living environment that is functional, bright and in harmony with its surroundings.
