Programme

Renovation of the public library to low energy standards

About

The Library project involves a demolition and reconstruction strategy, justified by the poor architectural quality of the existing building, its constrained position within the interior of the block, and the ambition to better enhance and optimise the available surfaces and spaces. The original carriage entrance continues to provide access to the residential units, while a more generous and clearly identifiable entrance to the Library has been created from Rue Haute.

Beyond functional requirements, particular attention was paid to natural light, orientation, and views from the various spaces, as well as to the relationship between interior and exterior and the project’s impact on its surrounding context. Visual permeability from Rue Haute towards the interior of the block has been reinforced. The proposed spaces are generous in both floor area and volume. The façade facing the interior courtyard opens widely onto the school playground, offering a playful and colourful backdrop for users (teachers, children, etc.) through the integration of a coloured brise-soleil. The new curved roof is greened and visible from the neighbouring residential units, contributing to the quality of the shared urban landscape.

The Library accommodates different types of spaces:

  • a ground floor housing the reception area and reading rooms for children and teenagers;
  • a lower ground floor opening onto the school courtyard, including a multi-purpose room designed for both children and adults;
  • an upper floor dedicated to an adult reading room.
